EcoAlpha youth participated in a corn husk reuse workshop where they learned about Indigenous teachings and practices that encourage people to use natural resources thoughtfully and avoid waste. Participants explored the idea of viewing plants and animals as relatives rather than simply as resources, fostering gratitude, respect, and responsibility for the natural world. These lessons showed how traditional knowledge can guide communities toward more sustainable ways of living in harmony with nature.
During the hands-on workshop, the youth learned how corn husks—often treated as agricultural waste—can be woven and shaped into useful and decorative pieces. By giving the husks a new purpose, participants experienced how creativity, cultural knowledge, and environmental stewardship can work together. The activity inspired them to reconsider what is considered “waste” and to appreciate the value of every part of a plant.
