The Slice of Shoreview is an annual festival held to celebrate life in Shoreview, MN. It features a variety of family-oriented activities including a carnival, parade, art and craft fair, food vendors, displays and demonstrations. The Slice of Shoreview initiated an effort to reduce large events' adverse impact on environment through sustainable practices.
Promoting Proper Waste Management
EcoAlpha members volunteered as organic station monitors to making sure waste was sorted correctly, promoting recycling and composting efforts. EcoAlpha showed attendees how to properly dispose of their waste. They helped visitors separate their trash into the right bins, ensuring that compostable and recyclable materials were handled correctly. This effort not only reduced the event's waste but also educated people about the importance of proper waste management.
Environmental Impact
EcoAlpha's dedication to environmental sustainability matched perfectly with the sustainable goals of the Slice of Shoreview. Their participation demonstrated how community involvement can help achieve environmental goals. The event's success in reducing its ecological footprint was greatly due to the hard work and commitment of EcoAlpha members and other volunteers, showing the vital role that volunteer organizations play in promoting green initiatives.
Here is the feedback from Slice of Shoreview staff, "There's a saying, 'Many hands make light work.' And the organics recycling wouldn't happen without your many hands helping.
Together we recycled 536 lbs of organics - material that used to go to a landfill or incinerator. Those methods give off a tremendous amount of greenhouse gas. By composting those organics we will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of:
Having three cars not drive for an entire year
or
Supplying 2.5 homes with all the electricity they need for a year
or
Charging 812,005 cellphones
Thanks for helping set the example that we can reduce the environmental impact of events like this. "
