EcoAlpha recently conducted an interactive environmental education activity for middle school students focused on recycling and composting. During the session, EcoAlpha youth leaders explained what materials can be recycled, composted, or thrown away. Students learned that recyclable items commonly include materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, and glass containers. Compostable materials include food scraps, fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, and yard waste such as leaves and grass clippings. Items that cannot be recycled or composted, such as plastic wrappers, Styrofoam, and certain mixed materials, must be disposed of as trash. Through examples, students learned how proper waste sorting helps reduce landfill waste, conserve natural resources, and protect the environment.
To make the experience engaging and memorable, EcoAlpha incorporated interactive questions and hands-on activities throughout the session. Students were asked to identify common items and decide whether they belonged in recycling, compost, or trash bins. This interactive approach encouraged participation and helped students apply what they learned to real-life situations. The activity concluded with a discussion about how students can practice sustainable waste habits at school and at home, such as reducing food waste, recycling properly, and supporting composting programs. By combining environmental education with interactive learning, EcoAlpha aims to inspire students to become responsible stewards of the environment and promote sustainable waste practices within their communities.
